CVIP Information

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP), a non-profit community benefit organization, was formed in 1995 by a few local residents who saw the need to bring together and support a number of small groups and individuals who were struggling to improve the quality of life in the Chiloquin area. With its tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status, CVIP is able to receive grants and donations to fund projects which move the area toward a healthy social, economic, natural, and cultural environment

After supporting some early projects such as enabling the start-up of Two Rivers Village Arts, providing equipment for Little League, overseeing the creation of the historical mural in downtown Chiloquin, and assisting the Friends of the Chiloquin Library to obtain interim support pending the passage of the Library Service District, CVIP embarked on the ambitious effort to raise funds for a Community Center. The all-volunteer effort took five years of design, planning, fund raising and construction, but the Chiloquin Community Center opened its doors in June of 2004. After five years of successful operation, it has become what its founders had envisioned, a warm and welcoming place for the whole community, a place of learning and art, a provider of needed community services, and a catalyst for building our sense of community and enhancing the quality of life for all of us

CVIP is managed by a Board of Directors comprised of community members and is supported by Center leases, room rentals, fund raisers and donations. All donations are tax-deductible. Please see the web pages for Chiloquin Community Center, Chiloquin Learns after School, Two Rivers Village Arts, Friends of the Chiloquin Library, and Chiloquin Area Economic Development Council for further information on CVIP's Projects and Programs.

Writer in Residence Program

The Writer in Residence program, created to bring recognized authors for short stays in underserved communities in Eastern Oregon, came out of the Fishtrap Writers' Conference in Wallowa County. Doug Frank, a friend of Chiloquin and of the arts, had sponsored other efforts in our community including the "Stories along the Sprague" book of personal profiles of local elders and the high school photography workshop which displayed students' work at the Chiloquin Community Center in October 2006. (This work can be seen on-line at chiloquinyouthphotoproject.com Doug brought Chiloquin to the attention of the Fishtrap sponsors and worked to raise funds to support the program's introduction here in 2007.

Writer Ellie Belew, of Roslyn, WA, was our first resident writer and got both the writing program in the high school and the adult workshops in Chiloquin and Sprague River off to a promising start. For the last two school years, Laura Gamache, a Seattle poet, has worked with the CHS English class taught by Haydn McLay and developed a strong poetry-writing effort. She was able to publish a collection of the students' poems, "The News from Chiloquin", at the end of the 2008-09 year. Some copies are still available for sale in the CVIP office. She hopes to publish a second volume of student work to be available this spring. Laura has also held adult writing workshops in both Chiloquin and Sprague River as part of the nine-week fall program.

CVIP is currently seeking funding to continue the program for a fourth year, the 2010-11 school year. For further information contact the CVIP office or the program coordinator, Leslie Russell, at 541-783-3923.
